Update on COVID-19 Protocols

April 1, 2022

Dear Clergy of the Diocese of Virginia,

Holy Week and Easter are quickly approaching.  After two spring seasons in which our worship was significantly changed, we look forward to gathering safely in our worship places this year.  For this, we have great reason to give thanks.

As you make final preparations for this most holy time of the year, please remember that clergy in charge of congregations, whether in parishes, missions or other settings, have authority to make decisions regarding worship and COVID protocols in their specific and local context. This includes decisions around masking, social distancing, receptions and other gatherings involving food, and the use of the common cup in celebrations of the Holy Eucharist.

Please continue to monitor your COVID-19 Community Level.  If that level is high/orange, please continue to be cautious and follow the strictest of the protocols that you have followed in the past.  If the local level is medium/yellow, you may loosen restrictions.  If the level is low/green, you may loosen as far as you are comfortable.  Please do check the level for your area regularly.  While we are hopeful that we are out of the woods at last, we must be attentive to the highly contagious Omicron BA.2 subvariant that is now rampant in parts of Asia and eastern Europe, and which may appear here in the western hemisphere.

If you have any questions, please contact Canon Abbott at or 804-643-8451, ext. 1012.

Faithfully yours,

The Rt. Rev. Susan E. Goff
