Celebrating composer, arranger & singer Harry Thacker Burleigh, this weekend remembers this saint of the Episcopal Church on the anniversary of his death. Burleigh is known for his compositions and arrangement of spirituals to be sung by anyone who can read music. On Friday, September 10, noted Professor Paul Kwami will lead a Zoom discussion on how to raise up Black voices via the intersection of spirituals & scripture. On Saturday, September 11, VCU's Erin Freeman will lead a community chorus in Monroe Park with a pop-up performance. In the afternoon soloist Lisa Edward-Burrs will sing Burleigh works during Audio Divina in Grace & Holy Trinity Church. On Sunday, September 12, special music highlighting Burleigh and other prominent Black voices will be featured in worship.
