The Rev. Dr. Mary Brennan Thorpe
The Rev. Dr. Mary Brennan Thorpe is Canon to the Ordinary. She assists Bishop Goff in the joyful mission goal of healthy, vibrant parishes served by healthy, creative clergy. Prior to her current role, she was Director of Transition Ministry. She has also served parishes in Northern and Central Virginia and has held leadership roles such as President of the Transition Ministry Conference, Dean of the North Richmond Region, and Chair of the Committee on the Diaconate.
She holds a BA in Music from Jersey City State College, an M.Mus. Ed. with a concentration in orchestral conducting from the Hartt College of Music of the University of Hartford, CT, an M.Div cum laude from Virginia Theological Seminary, and a D.Min. in Congregation Studies from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, where her doctoral research on the search process became the basis for the Diocese’s current approach to transitions.
She is married to the Rev. Dr. Douglas Thorpe, a pastoral counselor and Executive Director of the Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care, and has five children and five grandchildren. Mary winds down with knitting, reading and writing icons. (Come see them in her office and elsewhere in Mayo House!)
