Announcing the Recipients of the 2020 Diocesan Grants

The Rt. Rev. Susan E. Goff, Bishop Suffragan and Ecclesiastical Authority of the Diocese of Virginia, is pleased to announce the recipients of the Diocese of Virginia Mustard Seed Grants and Peter James Lee Small Church Revitalization Grants.

Mustard Seed grants equip vital ministries in congregations all throughout the Diocese of Virginia. This year six grants were awarded to congregations to strengthen their various ministries. Each grantee will be in a better place to be able to meet needs they have found within their community, whether it’s a new outreach opportunity, improving their facility to encourage ministry growth, or supporting a world mission effort. The funds available for these grants come from your gifts to the annual Bishop’s Appeal.

The Bishop Peter J. Lee Endowment for Small Church Revitalization is an endowed fund to motivate small churches to gather internal resources to meet their ministry needs by requiring recipients to match the grant funds awarded dollar for dollar. Seven churches were awarded grants this year to provide physical revitalization to their space or expansion of their ministry presence. These projects will not only renovate and upgrade physical spaces, but also allow congregations to better provide for the people they serve.

Mustard Seed grantees this year include:

St. Thomas’, McLean  - St. Thomas’ Early Learning Center
Leeds, Markham - Early Childhood Stimulation program/ Guatemala Youth Initiative
Christ Church, Alexandria - Our Little Roses: A Shared Understanding
Trinity, Lancaster - Fencing and fall zones for new playground

“The Holy Spirit has been at work in these congregations for generations, inspiring them to strong ministries of direct, hands-on service to the communities around them,” said Bishop Goff. “I look forward to seeing how the Spirit will increase their mission through the grants they receive, and in other surprising ways that God has in store.”
