The Executive Board of the Diocese of Virginia

The Executive Board is the body which carries out the actions voted upon by the Council. It oversees the budget and program adopted by the Annual Council and submits a new budget to Council the following year.

The Executive Board is composed as follows:

• one member elected by each Regional Council;
• the President of Episcopal Church Women; and
• the Bishop, Bishop Coadjutor, if there be one, and Suffragan Bishops, if any.

Each Region elects one member to serve three years on the Board, alternating between clergy and laity.

The Bishop is President of the Executive Board; the Board elects a lay member as Vice President.

The Bishop appoints, subject to the approval of the Board, a Coordinator of the Executive Board.

The Executive Board may adopt by-laws in keeping with diocesan canons.

Canonical responsibilities of the Executive Board include:

• carrying out the directions of Annual Council between sessions of Council;
• oversight of the budget adopted by Council;
• submission of a proposed budget to Council each year;
• approval of petitions for changes in church status from mission to church;
• approval of the appointment of Diocesan Trustees;
• provision for oversight of inactive churches, buildings and property;
• approval of sale of any property belonging to the Diocese; parish property held in trust for the Diocese by Trustees of the parish;
• review and approval of the charters and purpose statements of all related organizations such as Church Schools;
• approval of investments of funds of the Diocese (currently with Trustees of the Funds);
• elections of members to committees of the Executive Board; and
• serving as a communication link between the Diocese and the Regions.
