Richmond Hill is a monastic community, which we believe is an ideal setting for our time together. For more on what to expect, read Richmond Hill's Rhythm of Life. They’re located at 2209 E. Grace Street, Richmond, Va., 23223 (map below).

We’re indeed excited that you have been called to join us for this training. We want to share several essential preparations that will allow you to reap the most benefit from our precious time at the retreat.  First, please read two short but essential books in preparation for the retreat, which can be purchased through Amazon:

  • Listening Hearts: Discerning Call in Community, by Suzanne G. Farnham, et al., Morehouse Publishing, 2011 (20th Anniversary Ed.)
  • Grounded in God, by Suzanne G. Farnham, et al., Morehouse Publishing, 1998 (Revised Ed.)

Please be careful to get the listed editions. Some recommend reading Listening Hearts before reading Grounded in God. Irrespective of your reading order, what is important is that you read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest the wisdom and lessons of these books before the training. As we said, these are short books and reading both before January 10 should be a manageable commitment.

Second, we ask that you begin to discern your understanding of the differences between the various orders of ministry – layperson, priest, or deacon – that God calls us to. Several resources may help with your discernment:

  • The Book of Common Prayer, pp. 855-56 (Ministry section in Outline of Faith)
  • The Book of Common Prayer, pp. 525-551 (Priest and Deacon Ordination Liturgies)
  • The Diocesan website’s resources under “Vocation and Call

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email us.

Blessings and peace,

The Rev. Bambi Willis & Mr. Tom Hahn
