The work of theologians and philosophers is to move the conversation about ultimate things, to speculate and craft ideas in fragile words addressing what matters most to humanity. Our thinking about God and reality and what it means to be a living, conscious part of this vast universe changes over time. We experience that change when we find ourselves asking new questions about our faith, or we find that our traditions no longer speak to our situation. In such times we may be open to new voices that can lead us beyond the familiar into new territory.

Raimon Panikkar’s work as a theologian, philosopher, scientist, and priest begins with the understanding that a thinking, rational approach to problem solving, so common in the western world, can not adequately address our ultimate questions. As a leading voice in interreligious dialogue until his death in 2010, Panikkar introduces us to the possibility, common in other religions, of living in an awareness of God that does not require answers and explanations. As a mystic and visionary scholar he foresees a time when the faithful of the world’s religions will draw upon each other’s insights and wisdom in a common quest for deeper grounding in God.

Panikkar brings to his teaching his heart, his insistence on the importance of experience, his humor, and his love of wisdom, in which he encounters the wisdom of love. He imagines our approach to the divine being met by the realization that the object of our seeking is not an object at all, but a loving, responding part of reality with whom we have always been engaged.

Following our usual format of presentation and small group discussion, this series will introduce the writings of Raimon Panikkar and his passion for the divine, human, cosmic dance that includes us all.

John Baker is the Rector of St. Aidan's parish and a part of the leadership team for the Center for Spiritual Deepening.
