The study begins with Eucharist in the Chapel followed by lunch (bring your own) in the Ministry Center and a study of Marilynne Robinson's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Gilead. Set in rural Iowa in the 1950’s, a Congregationalist minister, John Ames, is dying and he writes a letter to his six-year-old son, so he will know his father through his own words. This letter speaks of his own tales of doing ministry in his small town, of the effects of the two World Wars and even the Civil War on his life and small town. A deeply moving and theologically complex experience, it raises themes of forgiveness, salvation, spirituality and the limitations of the human heart. John Ames says, “For me writing has always felt like praying.” Join us as we pray our way through this book this Lent.
