Engaging our Voices in Encounter with the Living God. A Weekend of Singing in Community, "off the page," led by Martha Jones Burford.
Friday, October 4, 6:30-9:00 p.m.
Singing from the Heart
We will dive into the ancient practice and joy of singing without paper. With mindfulness to each other, space, our breaths, and God's presence, we'll sing composed songs, folk songs, hymns of praise, cries of lament, and calls for justice.
What Songs Can We Give
When we were children, we made up songs. How can recover imaginations to sing the prayers our communities need? If we "Come and See!" John 1:39, what is our respond in sung prayer? The gospels tell the stories of villages, stables, and cottages. How do we embody the prayers of our villages in song? We'll write sung prayers: local theology with local musical response! Singing from the Heart
Saturday, October 5, 9:30 a.m.-Noon
We are Vessels for God's Songs
How can we, as choir singers, move beyond the symbols on the page to engage in the full spectrum of colors, feelings, sounds, and silences we make together? Alice Parker reminds us the page is not where the music happens. In liturgical settings, how do we bring our full singing attention to God? We will sing a number of anthems easily learned paperlessly or quickly memorized to experiment with being "off the page" and alert to each other. We'll be attentive to God's action in creation.
