Dear Friends:

I’m looking forward to seeing each of you at our Annual Clergy Retreat, which has been switched from October to May. Our theme is “All Hearts Open …In All that You Do,” taken respectively from the Collect for Purity and the Examination for ordination to the priesthood. This will be an important time for you, the clergy of our Diocese, to have the space to relax, reflect and re-energize in the beautiful setting of Shrine Mont.  Onsite registration and our porch welcome will begin at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 7.

The Stewardship of Authority

In the Examination for ordination to the priesthood, we are called in all that we do “to nourish Christ’s people from the riches of his grace.” The words for those being ordained as deacons are “to seek nourishment” from the Holy Scriptures and “to model your life upon them.” The source of these calls lies in the authority of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; the grace of these calls confers on each of us the responsibility to steward faithfully the many voices of authority that both surround us and guide us from within.

You, our clergy, had positive things to say about our retreat in 2013 when I, Bishop Goff and Bishop Gulick conducted the entire program. In grateful response, Bishop Goff, Bishop Ihloff and I are looking forward to leading the retreat for 2018. We intend to focus our discussions on sacred authority: its sources, how it calls us, and how we deploy it. We trust that this departure from the usual feature of a guest keynoter will deepen and enrich our mutual bonds of community and collegiality, as priests, deacons, and bishops.

The deadline for registration is Friday, May 4. This retreat is an appropriate use of discretionary funds, and diocesan scholarship assistance is available. Information on fees and registration will be available March 15th. To increase scholarship availability, I invite those who have the means to contribute to scholarships for others to send their gifts to the Diocese of Virginia in care of my office, with a note on the check, “Spring Clergy Retreat scholarship gift”. If you have questions, contact Bill Martin via e-mail at bmartin@thediocese.net  or at 800-DIOCESE.

I view our spring retreat as an essential time to renew our connectedness in common ministry, as well as to strengthen ourselves vocationally.  I trust that you will make every effort to be present for the entire retreat.

Registration can be made by completing the online registration form if you are paying by credit card. The deadline for registering online is Friday, May 4.

If you are paying by check, please complete the paper registration form and return it to:

The Diocese of Virginia
Attn: Bill Martin
110 W. Franklin St.
Richmond, VA 23220

The deadline for mail-in retreat registrations is Wednesday, May 2.

Please Note: The deadline for childcare registration has been extended to April 20.

Childcare is available for infants, toddlers and preschool-age children (ages 5 and under). There are no childcare provisions for children of elementary-school-age or older.   The cost for child care during the Spring Clergy retreat is $50 per child.

It is especially important that we know whether your child will be present during the group child care activities, since we need an accurate number of children to plan sufficient adult supervision. Therefore, the deadline to register your child for child care is FRIDAY, APRIL 20.  The adult-to-child ratio is so important that the child care coordinator will be required to turn away children who are not registered in advance. This is essential for the well-being and safety of your children as well as for insurance purposes.

The child care supervisors are not permitted to administer any medications (over-the-counter or prescription).

Child care is provided only during conference sessions. You are responsible for your child during all meals, receptions and free time.

If you wish to have child care, please complete the online registration or the paper childcare registration form and send the paper form with a check for the child care fee by the April 13 deadline to:

The Diocese of Virginia
Attn: Bill Martin
