The holiday season—beginning with Thanksgiving, and continuing with Advent, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year festivities—brings on powerful memories and emotions, and it can be a particularly painful time for those who have lost a child. At this time of year we are bombarded with nostalgic, idealized images of children, and expectations of loved ones gathering together, while bereaved parents and family members know that not everyone can be around the table, and that life will never again be as it was. The cultural imperative of “holiday cheer” causes many to feel they cannot bring up the name or the memory of a deceased child, increasing the sense of isolation. This annual interfaith service offers an opportunity to honor the memory of a beloved child, and to say his or her name aloud, whether that cherished person died 30 years ago or three weeks ago, whether as an adult, a teenager, a child or an infant. Faith communities from throughout the Richmond area, including many Episcopal churches, co-sponsor this offering. Child care is available for ages 5 and under, and a simple reception follows the service.
