Dear Friends:

Please join me for “All Hearts Open,” at our annual Bishop’s Fall Clergy Retreat.  This is an important time for you to reflect and renew at our Shrine Mont Retreat Center in Orkney Springs.  We will begin with registration at 3 p.m. on Monday, October 16 and continue through lunch on Wednesday, October 18.

The Stewardship of Hearts

The Collect for Purity is the source of our upcoming Diocese of Virginia theme: “to you all hearts are open.” In his retreat meditations, our facilitator Sam Portaro will reflect upon several dimensions, perspectives and implications of this rich theme. In these fractious times of social, political, cultural and ecclesiological ferment and change, clergy are especially challenged to lead from and with open hearts, in service to the God of the open heart. With time and space for personal reflection and opportunity for collegial conversation, this retreat aims to practice a stewardship of the heart that renews and strengthens.

The deadline for registration is Friday, October 13. The retreat is an appropriate use of discretionary funds and scholarship assistance is available. Fees and registration procedures are explained on the registration form. To increase scholarship availability, I invite those who can to contribute to scholarships for others by sending your gift to the Diocese of Virginia in care of my office, with a note on the check, “Fall Clergy Retreat scholarship gift.” If you have questions, contact Kate Wettstein via e-mail at kwettstein@thediocese.net  or at (703) 241-0441.

Our fall retreat is an important time of renewing the bonds of our common ministry, as well as strengthening ourselves vocationally.  I expect that you will make every effort to be present for the entire retreat.

Faithfully,
