The Rt. Rev. Francis Campbell Gray serves as the Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Virginia. From 1986 to 1997 he was the Bishop of Northern Indiana, and prior to that, served congregations in Florida, where he was ordained in 1969.

Bishop Gray is the child of missionary parents, and was born in Manila, Philippine Islands in 1940. Bishop Gray and his parents spent three years in a Japanese concentration camp, and were released in 1945. He has continued his interest in the mission field by serving for the past fourteen years on The House of Bishops Committee on World Mission, and for six years on the Standing Commission on World Mission. From 1999 to 2002 he served as President of the Compass Rose Society. He also served on the Board of the Anglican Investment Agency and the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Anglican Communion Fund. Bishop Gray has made several short term mission trips abroad, and, in 1990, was honored to represent the Presiding Bishop as the preacher at the installation of the first Prime Bishop of the Philippine Islands. Other areas in which Bishop Gray has served are: Member of the Board of The Presiding Bishop Fund for World Relief, Committee to Nominate the Presiding Bishop (1994-1997), Bishop liaison to Marriage Encounter (1988-1992). He has also served on the Boards of Trustees for two seminaries. Bishop Gray was graduated from Rollins College and Nashotah House Seminary, and served three years in the United States Marine Corps.

Bishop Gray’s published works include a tract on stewardship “Tithing, The Heart of the Matter”, and two books of poetry, Thursday’s Child (1994), and Beloved (1998). His poems and short stories have been published in several periodicals, and he is the author of a devotional commentary on the Gospel of Mark, published by the Bible Reading Fellowship.

Bishop Gray and his wife, Karen, live in Richmond, Virginia, and they have three grown children, a son-in-law, daughter-in-law and five grandchildren.
