Fred Camp Helps Local Community

St. George’s, Fredericksburg hosts a week-long camp each summer that combines Christian attitudes with Christian actions.  Fred Camp started out as a desire to work in the community of greater Fredericksburg. For years, St. George’s youth made their way to Petersburg for a similar camp, and for years when they came home they questioned why they couldn’t have something similar in their own community.

Every summer, around 60 youth and countless adults gather together to work and to begin to understand what it means to truly be in ministry with their community.  Fred Camp gathers youth from myriad congregations and faiths to go out into their community and to work for those in need.  For 10 years, residents of Fredericksburg have requested assistance with home repairs, and for 10 years the youth of St. George’s have responded.

On July 7, 10 crews of six or seven youth and one adult made their way to their sites, dotting the landscape of Fredericksburg with intentional attitudes.  Some crews worked diligently painting interiors and exteriors.  Other crews found themselves plumbing houses or laying new flooring.  Whatever the job, it was met with a sense of love, joy and an extreme willingness to help.  For a week the youth of Fredericksburg lived out the words of St. Francis, preaching the Gospel and using words only when necessary. When that week was over they took their newfound compassion home.

But work was not the only facet of Fred Camp.  In addition to helping with houses, participants spent the second half of their afternoons playing games, skateboarding and spending time with one another. Fredericksburg Christian High School was the host site for the week.

While Fred Camp is a lot of fun and games, the overwhelming desire for all involved is to be in Christian community working for the whole community.  The next time you come to Fredericksburg, stop to look at the houses and ask yourself, is that one of the Fred Camp houses?
