Today, the Fairfax Circuit Court ruled that the amici who filed a joint brief in support of the Diocese and the Episcopal Church will be able to participate in oral arguments at the constitutional issues hearing on May 28. These amici include six national denominations and ten Virginia judicatories.
The broader faith community, which stands at grave risk as a result of the 57-9 division statue, will have its voice heard at the May 28 hearing, which will address the unconstitutionality of a law threatening the right of churches to govern themselves according to their own faith and polity. These oral arguments will reveal the intrinsic unconstitutionality of a law that is hostile to the concept of religious freedom in violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the Virginia Constitution.
