Spotlight: Community of Spice

Who We Are
Community of Spice was conceived as a medium to reach out to persons married to clergy. Frequently these persons are female, but more and more there are men who find themselves in this unique and fascinating, as well as trying and isolating way of life. Community of Spice subscribers also include fiancées, spouses of seminarians, pairs of ordained spouses, committed life partners and at least a few widows. We have a small number of subscribers who are married to Lutherans and Presbyterians. One priest’s husband who has written guest editorials for us is Jewish.Stereotypes about us abound, but stereotypes constrain everyone...those being stereotyped as well as those making the stereotyped judgments. Stereotyping diminishes all of us.

Produced quarterly (January, April, July October), Community of Spice deals with issues and concerns, joys and successes of those of us who have attached our lives and hearts to the clergy. It has been well received and is connecting persons in the “Spice Community”.

Conservative or Liberal?
The editorial board consists of a priest’s wife, a female deacon, and two children of two priests. The medical consultants include three laypersons. The psychiatrist is an Episcopal laywoman; the other two physicians are Roman Catholic.

We are evenly split politically and theologically. We embrace the label “liberal”. We take up the characteristic “conservative”.This is not a publication that debates the issues of the day. There are already plenty of forums for those discussions.

We are spouses dealing with our own day to day issues; compassionately reaching out to each other, affectionately supporting each other. The issues produced in the first year focused on: friendships and loneliness, finances, relationships with bishops, and PK’s. There are a limited number of copies of the first year available on a first come, first served basis.
