Episcopal Church Women Spring Meeting - Thursday, May 23, 2013

The theme of this year's meeting is "Many Paths, One Journey; Many Challenges, Going Home." Keynote speaker Joshua Bailey is co-founder and CEO of the Gray Haven, an organization based in Richmond that provides needed services to victims of human trafficking.

The Rev. Torrence Harman, rector, will guide the group in a study of how to weave spiritual responsibilities into our personal journeys. If weather permits, participants may also walk the outdoor labyrinth.

Strawberry Festival - Saturday, May 25, 2013

St. Stephen's Annual Strawberry Festival will be on the grounds of the historic church in Heathsville. The festival will feature more than 150 quality craft vendors and community groups, a variety of food, homemade strawberry shortcake, fresh locally grown strawberries, a large plant & bake sale, live music, free face painting, the YMCA dunking booth, health screenings, and more. The Strawberry Festival is one of the largest community events in the Northern Neck and draws thousands of people from throughout the region. Parking is free and the festival is central to other events going on in Heathsville the same day: The Heathsville United Methodist Church Fish Fry, and the Northumberland Public Library Book Sale. Annual Opening of Trinity, Beaverdam - Sunday, May 26, 2013

Trinity Church Preservation, Inc. will open Trinity Episcopal Church built in 1830 for Holy Eucharist. The Rev. Robert G. Hetherington will officiate and Marsha Worsham will play the organ. Those who wish to bring a picnic can join others in the church yard at 2:00. There will be a reception following the service. All are welcome.

Memorial Concert - Sunday, May 26, 2013

St. James's Episcopal Church will celebrate its biannual Memorial Concert honoring military veterans at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, during Memorial Day weekend, reports music director Dr. Mark Whitmire. The concert, given in remembrance of those who have died in military service and in thanksgiving for those among us who have served or are serving in our nation's armed forces, will include music for double choir and brass, a Palestrina mass (Missa Christi Aeterna munera) and spirituals by Moses Hogan, performed by the St. James's Festival Chorus and Orchestra. An offering will be taken to benefit the Virginia War Memorial Foundation and other non-profits that serve veterans. A champagne gala reception will follow in the Church's undercroft. All veterans and military service men and women in the central Virginia area are invited and encouraged to attend this free concert program. St. James's Episcopal Church is located at 1205 West Franklin Street near Virginia Commonwealth University. The Memorial Day concert has become a tradition at St. James's as one of any outreach events and public services it provides to the wider Richmond community. New Clergy Orientation - Tuesday, May 28, 2013

All clergy who have begun new ministries in the Diocese within the past 18 months, including the newly ordained and those who are transitioning from other dioceses, are invited to attend. The orientation will take place at the Mayo House on Tuesday, May 28 and go from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This orientation is designed to help ensure that clergy entering our diocesan community or new ministries within the community feel welcomed, supported, and know about the resources available to them and their congregations. Attendees are invited to worship at Mayo House’s weekly Eucharist, join together for lunch with the bishops, meet the diocesan staff, and participate in a question and answer session.

Annual Yard Sale & Silent Auction - Friday, May 31, 2013

The entire parish hall is filled to overflowing with antiques, artwork, books, toys, tools, household items, knick knacks, small furniture, and other miscellaneous items. Money raised is used to benefit the such local organizations as: St. Luke Community Clinic, Community Transitional Housing, C-CAP, Christmas shopping for needy children, and other groups. Hymn Festival with Bruce Neswick - Sunday, June 02, 2013

The choirs of Christ Church, St. Mary's Arlington, Grace Church Alexandria, St. George's Arlington, St. Luke's Alexandria, St. Paul's Alexandria, and Church of the Redeemer Bethesda, will combine for a memorable hymn festival at Christ Church Sunday, June 2, at 5:00 p.m. The service will feature a variety of hymns sung by both the congregation and the combined choirs. The organist and conductor for the service will be Bruce Neswick, the Associate Professor of Organ and Sacred Music at the University of Indiana. A festive reception will follow in the churchyard.

Sommers Grave Marking Ceremony - Saturday, June 08, 2013

The George Washington and Fairfax Resolves Chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution will hold a grave marking ceremony for Revolutionary War Patriot Major Simon Sommers on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., at The Falls Church Episcopal.

The ceremony will include the presentation of colors by the SAR Color Guard in period dress, prayers for the nation, and brief remarks regarding Major Sommers and the units in which he served. A brass SAR marker and plaque will be dedicated and representatives of the SAR and other patriotic organizations will also lay wreaths at Major Sommers’ grave. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the historic sanctuary of The Falls Church Episcopal will be open for public tours.

“One of the primary goals of the SAR is to mark the final resting places of the Patriots of the American Revolution so that future generations will remember the men and women who through their efforts and sacrifices established the United States,” said Michael Elston, president of the George Washington Chapter. “While we honor Major Sommers for his service, we also hope to inspire the present and future generations of American patriots to rededicate themselves to the principles on which our nation was founded.”

Born in 1747, Major Sommers served as Adjutant with the 6th Virginia Regiment, a unit raised in Williamsburg in February 1776 for service with the Continental Army during the War for Independence, and the 2nd Virginia Regiment after they merged in September 1778. The 2nd and 6th Virginia Regiments were involved in the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Monmouth, and Germantown, along with the siege of Charleston. Of historical note, Major Sommers was one of the officers signing the Valley Forge Oath of Allegiance in May 1778. He retired in 1781 to due an extended illness and awarded 4,666 acres of land and a pension for his service to the country. Following his death in 1836, Major Sommers was interred in the churchyard of The Falls Church Episcopal. He was previously honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1971.

“We are honored to host this event, recognizing one of the brave Americans who fought to secure liberty nearly 240 years ago,” said The Rev. John Ohmer, rector of The Falls Church Episcopal. “It is important that we continue to remember those who have sacrificed so much over the past two centuries to protect our freedom. This ceremony gives us an opportunity to pay tribute to an officer who played an important role in setting the 13 original colonies on the path to independence.”

Episcopal Church Foundation Planned Giving/Capital Campaign Workshops

The Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) will offer two workshops on critical areas in the financial life of your parish: planned giving and capital campaigns. Workshops are free and open to all clergy and lay leaders.

Grace & Holy Trinity, Richmond will host both workshops, which will run concurrently from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday, June 15.

In Capital Campaign Readiness, ECF consultant Andi Tilmann will teach attendees how to prepare for and execute a campaign that will strengthen your annual stewardship, raise up new leadership and unite your congregation, as well as funding your capital projects.

In Setting Up a Planned Giving Program for Your Parish, ECF managing program director James Murphy will help take the mystery out of planned giving for your parish. Learn in easy-to-understand terms how planned giving differs from annual stewardship and capital campaigns, and how your parish can build endowments through wills and life income gifts. After a review of the planned giving instruments, you will learn about the importance of a parish vision, protecting and growing your endowment, and how to invite others to remember your parish through estate and financial planning.

Anthony Snape returns to Westover Episcopal Church to share his new cd and songs from his old cds. This young man has been all over the world touring and has had songs featured on "The Biggest Loser," a Dianne Sawyer news interview, he had a successful college circuit tour in the U.S., and has appeared with Australian guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel on Tommy's PBS special; Tommy Emmanuel and Friends. One of his song writing partners is none other than 2 time Grammy nominated songwriter, Pam Rose. Anthony raised the money to create his latest cd by doing a crowd funding project on Kickstarter. While most projects on Kickstarter fail to reach their goal, Anthony's project exceeded his goal because so many people believe in this young man's talent. His latest cd is a little bit rock and a little bit easy listening and no matter your taste in music, something he plays is sure to "resonate" with you. Come out and have a great time hearing this talented artist, support independent music, and help support Westover Church's outreach programs. BBQ & Bluegrass Festival - Saturday, June 29, 2013

This year's event features 2 headlining bands.

James Justin & Co. Based in Richmond, JJ&Co have developed a large and spirited base of fans throughout the Southeast playing a mix of traditional roots music and bluegrass, and by drawing on a variety of musical influences. They are favorites at major festivals, including the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion and FloydFest, and have played with and opened for major artists including Sam Bush, Taj Mahal and the Stringdusters.

The Code Blue Bluegrass Band, is coming back this year for an encore performance. For those who haven't heard them, Code Blue is one of Virginia’s most popular and best bluegrass bands. They are a perennial favorite at Virginia bluegrass festivals, and have performed with Dr. Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys, Earl Scruggs and Marty Stewart, and many other outstanding bluegrass bands.

This year's event will again feature a traditional pig roast. The all you can eat menu includes pork barbecue, hot dogs with all the fixin's, beans, slaw, brownies, and soft drinks. Beer and wine will also be available. A number of door prizes will be awarded including tickets to St. Stephen's Oysters and Oldies, CD's, tee shirts, etc.

Tickets are $25.00 (Free admission at the gate for children under 12) and will be limited to 500. Ticke ts may be purchased on line or at EVB (Heathsville), Bank of Lancaster (Heathsville and Kilmarnock), and Essex Bank (Callao and Burgess). St. Stephen's Episcopal Thrift Shop. Youth Leader Connections - Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Youth Leader Connection (YLC) gatherings that will take place twice a semester dedicated directly to those who work with youth in our parishes.

The meetings themselves will provide opportunities to explore and discuss the unique challenges youth workers in our diocese face while strengthening networks and building collaborations. They are intended for ANYONE who works with youth: part-time, full-time, or volunteer. In fact, we encourage entire youth ministry leadership teams to attend these events together. We hope to offer a chance for youth workers to visit and get to know one another while exchanging best practice resources, and other aspects of their work. YLC gatherings will create communities of youth workers who can support each other, pray with and for each other, and learn from one another.

Each meeting will last 90 minutes and will take place on either a Tuesday or Thursday evening. The format will include time to socialize, a large group forum, and potentially some small group workshops or discussions. It is our hope that each of you will be able to attend one per semester, whichever one is closer to you. It’s also our hope that the meetings will be fun and a great use of everyone’s time.

Westover Autumn Pilgrimage House Tour - Saturday, September 28, 2013

The Autumn Pilgrimage House Tour is always a big event, as the doors of many of our nation's most historic homes are opened to the public for one day. The 2013 house tour, however, will have an extra significance, as it celebrates a landmark birthday of one of the most historic churches in the United States. Westover Church's 2013 tour of historic Charles City homes and gardens, some recently renovated and some open for the first time and for this day only, will be held on Saturday, September 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year's tour celebrates the 400th anniversary of Westover Church. The parish's original structure was built on Westover Plantation in the early 1600s soon after the settlement of Jamestown. It was dismantled and reconstructed on its present site on Herring Creek in 1730.
