Committee & Commission Structure

Commission
  • An umbrella group appointed by the bishop, made up of members who serve specific terms. Members serve terms of three years, with a limit of two consecutive terms served. Members must wait one year after serving two consecutive terms before serving another term, unless at the discretion of the bishop. Members may also be appointed to serve one-year terms.
  • Membership is composed of both committee representatives and those who are not committee members but who serve the commission exclusively in an advisory role.
  • Meets at least quarterly and oversee the work of committees.
  • Communicates back to the bishop and bishop’s staff.
  • Creates and monitors committee budgets.
  • Collects and compiles required annual committee reports and budget requests for Annual Council.
  • With the bishop, oversees the creation of ministry teams.
  • Regulates term limits for their own commission, in addition to those of committees and ministry teams.
  • Ensures that the five priority goals are lived out in the work of their respective committees.
Committee
  • A group dedicated to creating effective and helpful resources and programs to benefit the life of a Diocese around a specific area; can also review and recommend existing programs and resources.
  • Membership is through nomination and subsequent appointment by the bishop.

  • Fulfills certain canonical requirements.
  • Creates budget requests and submits them to respective commission for review.
  • Reports back to the commission.
Ministry Team
  • Smaller group created by a commission or the bishop for a specific ministry area.
  • Can be ongoing or for a defined period of time.
  • Can be made up of committee or non-committee members.
  • Evaluates programs/resources and provides suggestions to the commission, committee or bishop.
